The Community College Survey of Student Engagement is Approaching

In research, student engagement has been found to be positively correlated with student learning, persistence and subsequent educational attainment. The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) has been specifically designed to assess student engagement in the community college educational environment. Items measure student engagement in the classroom and engagement outside of the classroom. They also gather additional demographic information not typically gathered by our student information system. Past survey results have been used by the Student Engagement Team and in strategic planning initiatives. Institutional Research provides a data dashboard report of past years’ results to all who have a Power BI license for further review. In the past three months, this dashboard has been viewed 70 times.

The administration of CCSSE in randomly selected classrooms involves a systematic process aimed at gathering valuable feedback from students to enhance their educational experience. Faculty members play a crucial role in facilitating this process by allowing Institutional Research to visit their classrooms and distribute the survey. Through the random selection of classrooms, the survey captures diverse perspectives, ensuring a representative sample of student voices. This data-driven approach empowers faculty to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement within their teaching practices and the overall learning environment. By participating in CCSSE administration, faculty contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, ultimately fostering student success and institutional effectiveness.

In preparation for the administration of CCSSE this spring term, Institutional Research hosted an informational Zoom meeting for faculty on Friday, March 22 , 2024. The recording of this session can be found here. We encourage you to share this with those in your department.
