‘For the Children’ Conference Report

The Southern Oregon chapter of the Oregon Association for the Education of Young Children held its annual winter conference at the Riverside Campus on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2024.

The conference was hosted in collaboration with the RCC Early Childhood & Elementary Education Department, SOU, SOELS (Southern Oregon Early Learning System), Early Intervention via the Douglas County ESD and the local Childcare Resource & Referral Network. Current and former RCC faculty and students collaborated to host this successful conference, which is now the largest early childhood conference in Oregon.

More than 250 early childhood educators gathered for a series of workshops. Sessions were offered in English and some were simultaneously translated into Spanish. Several workshops were presented in Spanish. The keynote speaker, Carolyn Garboden Murray, is the director of Vassar University’s preschool in New York. Her nationally acclaimed book, “Illuminating Care,” was featured. A free community viewing of the documentary “Forget Me Not” was offered. It is a film by Olivier Bernier about a family working for diversity and inclusion in the New York school system for their son with special needs.
