About Hispanic Heritage Month
Why is Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15? The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to cover 30 days starting on Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 15. The date range is significant because it coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries—including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua—on Sept. 15. It also includes independence days for Mexico on Sept. 16, and Chile on Sept. 18. Many Americans believe what we celebrate on Cinco de Mayo is Mexican independence, but that day commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla. Learn about that history and more in the resources below!
