Let’s talk about mental health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year it seems especially important. Adapting to this coronavirus pandemic has created a lot of stress.

In addition to the new academic challenges you’re facing due to online classes, we know that many students are facing financial stress, childcare struggles and other obstacles that affect emotional well-being. In light of these challenges, there are a few special programs we want you know about:

RCC Counseling is starting a COVID-19 Support Group especially for RCC students like you. The group will meet at 11 a.m. Thursdays — starting tomorrow! — facilitated by RCC counselors. If interested, please email Tom Pike or Eva Akiyama for the Zoom link.

Student government’s roundtable event tomorrow will discuss invisible disability barriers with RCC Disability Services Coordinator Andrew Childress. Drop in at noon Thursday, May 28, via Zoom; click this link or enter Zoom Meeting ID: 970 4941 1909, Password: ASGRCC.

Catch the recording of today’s event “How to Live Mentally Well and Crush It During Difficult Times,” presented by ASG and the RCC Diversity Programming Board. Author and college mental health specialist Josh Rivedal gives an engaging presentation on what mental health is (and what it’s not); offers coping skills; discusses depression and anxiety; how to reframe failure; how to help oneself or a friend if in need; and finding and cultivating hope during difficult times. This video will be available for viewing through the summer.

And, please, reach out to Counseling if you would like to talk with someone. RCC’s professional counselors are ready to talk with you about personal issues. Email counseling@roguecc.edu or call 541-245-7552 in Medford or 541-956-7192 in Grants Pass.

Hang in there, Ospreys! We’re in this together, and RCC is committed to helping you succeed.
