New Course Helps Students Learn to Use AI Effectively and Responsibly

The Computer Information Sciences Department will offer a new one-credit course this spring to help students understand and use artificial intelligence responsibly in a college setting.

“AI Tools for College Success” (CIS199) introduces students to what AI is, how generative AI tools work and how these tools are already showing up in academic and professional environments. The course emphasizes hands-on exploration of free, browser-based platforms such as ChatGPT, NotebookLM, Otter.ai and Gamma.app, with a strong focus on ethical use, verification of information and academic integrity.

Rather than teaching shortcuts or automation, the course helps students learn how to evaluate AI output, ask better questions and make informed decisions about when and when not to use AI in their coursework. Students will explore how AI can support tasks like understanding course material, preparing for exams, organizing information and creating presentations, while maintaining responsibility and critical thinking.

The course is offered in person at the Riverside Campus and is designed for students across disciplines who want a clear, practical introduction to AI in a structured classroom environment. There are no textbook costs and the course meets once per week.

Students interested in learning more about how AI fits into college learning and future careers may find this course a helpful addition to their spring schedule.
