Rogue Community College is proud to announce Scott Chancey, program supervisor of Josephine Community Transit, as the 2019 recipient of the RCC Outstanding Citizen Award for his distinguished service to the college and community. Chancey received the award at the 2019 Commencement held June 15 at The Expo in Central Point.
Over the past 10 years, Chancey has ensured the affordability and reliability of transit services for RCC students in Josephine County. Chancey has worked with RCC to set up an easy system to verify student status; expanded the route to Cave Junction to serve Illinois Valley riders; maintained appropriate service access to students with disabilities; and implemented use of a mobile app to track bus location and arrival times.
Chancey secured funding for a commuter line that connects JCT with Rogue Valley Transportation District routes in Jackson County. RCC students can transfer between Jackson and Josephine counties to all RCC campus locations. It is a major accomplishment to move students around our entire service area. He has also provided safety cameras and WiFi on the bus, employed professional drivers who prioritize safety, collaborated on accessible bus shelters and stops on campus, and listened to feedback.
“I too was an RCC student,” Chancey said. “RCC helped me mature as a student, a young man and enter into adulthood more confident than I thought was possible.”
Chancey attended RCC for two years, gaining knowledge and a study ethic, and then transferred to Southern Oregon University where he earned a degree in economics. “I definitely would not have been the student I was at SOU, or in the career I am in now without RCC, and I remain ever grateful,” he said.
One student who needed affordable transportation to Redwood Campus sums it up: “Without the RCC bus pass, it would not have been possible. On the bus, I saw other students from school and got a chance to interact with them outside of class. I even learned about some clubs I did not know about just from making friends with students on the bus. When I moved to Rogue River, I was still able to stay at RCC by using the commuter bus and transferring at the courthouse in Grants Pass. The bus was a big part of my experience at RCC.”
Each year, Rogue Community College recognizes an individual or organization that supports education with the RCC Outstanding Citizen Award. In 2018, RCC honored two organizations: AllCare Health for outstanding citizenship in health care and Carestream Health for outstanding citizenship in manufacturing.
AllCare Health is a physician-led organization that provides administrative support to independent health care providers, as well as insurance coverage to more than 50,000 Medicare and Medicaid members in Southern Oregon.
AllCare is also dedicated to giving back to the communities it serves. In 2018, AllCare provided financial support to over 150 local organizations and programs. Its primary focus is on building a healthy community and a healthier Oregon.
For many years, AllCare has provided scholarship and program support for Rogue Community College. Most recently, AllCare was RCC’s largest donor supporting the new Health Professions Center slated to open at the Table Rock Campus in 2020.
Carestream Health is a worldwide provider of medical imaging systems and other advanced manufacturing products. Carestream’s White City plant is a generous supporter of community and economic development in Southern Oregon.
In August 2016, Carestream leaders Mike Tylutki and Mike Donnelly began a remarkable relationship with RCC, sending a team to the Table Rock Campus for a full afternoon of discussion with RCC faculty about how they could partner with the college to develop the job applicants they were seeking. That meeting was the launch of a renewed relationship that resulted in regular meetings with faculty to enhance curriculum, develop a new mechatronics program, create a course in programmable logic controllers, and establish activities that prepare RCC students for work. Among these activities, Carestream employees have visited the college to teach students how to write resumes and prepare for interviews. In addition, Carestream has generously donated equipment to RCC technical programs and scholarship funds to the RCC Foundation.
