New ‘Preferred First Name’ Field in RogueNet

The Enrollment Services Department has some fantastic news to share! Thanks to the programming expertise of Grant Hubler in IT-Programming Services, there is a new field in Admin View, Advisor, the Student Services Login and Student Management for a Preferred First Name/First Name in Use. This is really exciting for our students, as they no longer have to use a “dead name.”

You may be wondering what is the difference between a “preferred first name” and a “first name in use.” The “preferred first name” option supports the use of a casual name, an Americanized name, or a nickname. The “first name in use” option supports the trans and gender-expansive population, who have chosen to use a name other than their current legal name, or name given at birth. RCC is using one field for both of these options. The field name is Pref FN and it is located on the main screen in Advisor, Admin View and Student Management and appears directly under the First Name field.

When this field is populated, it will replace the displayed first name in the following locations:

  1. On admin drop and grade rosters in Faculty Resources.
  2. On the Display name of Blackboard.
  3. It will appear in place of the first name when searching for students in Admin View, Advisor, Student Services Login and Student Management.
  4. It will display in the heading bar at the top of Admin View, Advisor and Student Management RogueNet.
  5. Students’ RCC email addresses will also be updated if they have a “First Name in Use” and have requested this.
  6. 6. The Financial Aid department will be notified to update the Preferred First Name field in PowerFaids.

RCC currently has an antiquated student information system and unfortunately, this field will not appear everywhere. For example, in a student’s myRogue account, it will still display the student’s legal name, our RogueNet reports will still display a student’s legal name and the Accounts Receivable RogueNet Program will still display a student’s legal name. This means that some of our mass communications out to students may be addressed to the student’s legal name.

If you are working with a student who has a different preferred first name or first name in use, please refer them to their myRogue account at www.roguecc.edu/myRogue. Once logged in, there is a form at the bottom of the Records section called “Name In Use Change Request Form.” The student will complete and submit this DocuSign form, and it will be sent to registrar@roguecc.edu for processing. RCC employees who have a different First Name in Use may also submit this request to have their name updated in RogueNet programs.

The Enrollment Services department does ask, in order to not be inundated with these requests, that you start by referring the students who are transitioning and have a different First Name in Use to this form, and not, for example, students who have a nickname such as William who wants to be called Will. In addition, please do not update this field yourself and instead refer students to the form located in myRogue, which will ensure the proper process is followed.
