At Rogue Community College, heroes stand beside our students, lifting them up and believing in the power of education. Rogue Heroes are RCC employees who support students through voluntary giving. Every dollar donated through payroll deduction, or one-time gifts goes directly to scholarships, emergency aid and programs that change lives.

During the past five years, staff members have contributed over $135,000 to:

This month, we are highlighting Rogue Hero Ted Smith.

What made you decide to participate for the first time?
When I first saw the information on becoming a Rogue Hero and giving a donation for a scholarship, I wanted to help someone fulfill their dream of attending college. My son, Aaron, had just graduated from Oregon State with a number of scholarships helping him attend and graduate from there. I’m big into paying back as well as helping others, so I knew I wanted to give. Looking at the list of scholarships, I saw my parents’ next-door neighbor who had just died, Mel Quimby, had a scholarship in his name. It was an easy decision to pick the one that honored the name of Mel, who had been a huge person in our community.
What makes you proud to be an employee donor?
It’s the fact that I’m not only helping students attend RCC, but I’m giving back to the school I graduated from in 1979.
How do you feel employee giving contributes to student success?
Scholarships not only help the student to be able to attend RCC, but it frees up their time of not having to worry as much about finances so they can put more time into studying.
What would you say to a colleague who’s considering donating?
It’s easy. If you can afford donating, do so. Giving to others is a great feeling!
