ESL Student Spotlight: Summer Term 2025

Karla began ESL classes winter term 2024 in our Level 1-2 course in person at RVC. She initially expressed interest in becoming a phlebotomist but did not know where to start. After her initial advising session with ESL staff, she followed through on staff’s referrals to our community partners such as WorkSource Rogue Valley and the Unemployment Office at DHS and received a scholarship to fund enrollment for a phlebotomy program beginning October 2025.

She is now in our Level 2-3 course for summer term 2025, demonstrating and directly applying her language acquisition skills in only one part of her academic journey. In the meantime, Karla is continuing to take ESL courses with us as advised by her academic advisor, community case managers, instructors and network of support.

Karla is one of the hundreds of ESL and GED® students in our Pre-College Education program who continually put in the work in and out of the classroom, and it is a privilege to serve them within our RCC community. She is a perfect example of the importance of why adult education matters in the Rogue Valley, at RCC and beyond. ESL is just the start.
